Chapter 12

FORREST

Alessia tried, unsuccessfully, to hip-chuck me. “You can stop manhandling me, now. No one’s looking, okay?”

I jerked her by the arm, probably harder than I had to. But I was beyond pissed. “You need to respect our lives here on the mountain. We do top-secret work, which means you need to be careful where you tread.”

“Why are you such a jerk, Forrest? Everyone else here is nice enough and then there’s you.”

I ignored her goading. If there was one thing I’d learned from the Special Forces, it was not to fall prey to someone trying to provoke me.

“C’mon,” I said, guiding her into the cabin. “I’m taking you to your room.”

“Fine. Take me to my room. But don’t think for one second you are welcome inside. If you step one foot over the threshold, I’ll scream for help.”

Christ. Entering her room was about the last damn thing on my mind. I wanted this woman out of my face… and out of our lives.

When we reached her door, I looked right at her. “Listen, Alessia. I know you’ve been through a lot. And you seem like a nice person. But you need to take responsibility for your actions. This isn’t some sort of amusement park. There are serious things at play that you have no visibility into. Things you don’t know about, and believe me, don’t want to know about.”

“Fine. Whatever, Forrest. If you think I’m that interested in your little world here, you have another thought coming. I could care less about you, and whatever mysterious work you do. I'm having someone come to get me. I can’t take this place and all your secrets any longer,” she said.

I took a deep breath to check my dwindling patience. “That, Alessia, is where you’re wrong. Not only are you not inviting anyone up here, you are also not leaving.”

I got her to her room, with Ozzy on her heels.

“You can’t make me stay here,” she said defiantly.

“Actually, we can. Until we decide what to do with you, since you so freely eavesdropped on a sensitive and top-secret meeting, you will be closed in your room here. If you need anything, knock and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. But we can’t risk having you stumble upon any more of our activities. It’s dangerous for us and dangerous for you.”

She looked over my shoulder at the guys standing behind me, desperate. “C’mon guys. Help me out,” she pleaded.

I turned to see them shaking their heads.

“Can’t Alessia. Sorry,” Remy said.

Her face turned bright red with anger. “Don't you all know I could give a shit about your little fantasy world up here? I don’t know anything about it, nor do I care to,” she shouted.

Ozzy must have been upset by the yelling, because she lunged at my leg.

“Oh, Ozzy!” Alessia exclaimed, running to scoop her up. “See, you even have her upset now. Just go. Leave us alone,” she said, waving us away.

“If you need anything, knock. But we are locking you in your room, Alessia,” I said.
